It’s time to highlight another diverse employee here at SOE! You’ve met the Community Team on the forums and at Fan Faire. But what about our fine folks in Finance, Human Resources, Development, Legal, Quality Assurance, Office Operations, Public Relations, Administrative Assistants, and Marketing, just to name a few. We have people from all walks of life here at SOE.
The Community Team would like to introduce you to those people in a monthly feature titled, “SOE Employee Spotlight.” Each month our spotlighted employee will also appear in some fashion on the Official SOE Podcast. This month you will meet Floyd Bishop, Senior Artist on the Free Realms Development Team. Take a moment to find out about what a typical day in the office is like for him, what his favorite SOE game is, and other fun tidbits. As a special bonus, we learned where his favorite location in-game is and included a screenshot for you to download!

Question: Question: Tell us about yourself! What’s your name and what do you do here at SOE? How long have you been working at SOE?
Answer: I’m a character animator and part time treble. According to the sticky note on the back of my badge, I’ve been at SOE since 4/28/08.
Question: How did you get into the industry?
Answer: I have a degree in Communication Design from Kutztown University in Pennsylvania. After doing 112 page vitamin catalogs for a little bit, I realized I hated doing graphic design as a career. I bought a bunch of animation books, and met a bunch of animators, and taught myself animation. I worked in film (Ice Age) and television (lots of pilots for Viacom) before working on games, and really enjoy animation for games much more. I’ve been doing game animation off and on since 2002.
Question: Tell us what a typical workday is like for you.
Answer: I get to work around 9 or 10, depending on the day, do scrum meetings in the morning, and then start in on animating. I usually drink two to four mugs of Darjeeling tea a day, depending on how lost in the animation I get.
Question: Let’s talk favorites… What is your favorite SOE game title? What is your favorite location, favorite thing about that game? Do you have a favorite memory or moment from that particular game?
Answer: I’m a bit biased, but I enjoy Free Realms. I like the little hidden cove in Seaside. It’s really kind of an out of the way place, but it’s got a little bit of everything: water, land, and launchpads. It’s a great place to test out animations in game.
As for a favorite memory, doing trade shows dressed as Chatty has always been fun. One of the highlights (and most painful) was when I tore my MCL in my left leg, after crashing on a skateboard after coming down a skate ramp at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Everyone told me not to, but the kids enjoyed it. The six weeks of physical therapy were worth it!
Question: If you could be any fictional character, who would you be?
Answer: I don’t know. Batman was always cool, but I wouldn’t want to be the Christian Bale version, with a voice like Cookie Monster.
Question: If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
Answer: I would love to be able to duplicate myself so that I could pursue everything at once. One version of me could go to work while another stayed home and played games all day.
Question: Let’s get real! Hobbies? What’s last book you read? Last movie you saw? What do you do to unwind after a busy day?
Answer: I really like to animate, and play games, so most of my free time involves that kind of thing. I make my own short films, and I play a lot of games. My favorite way to unwind is to try to get other people to rage quit servers. The last book I read was probably something about animation, either one of the “Drawn to Life” books, or re reading a Preston Blair book.
